Storyboard Text

  • Growing up I was always told to love who I am but to be careful out in the real world by adults.
  • Yet I never understood why.
  • Around the age of 8, I was racially profiled by a substitute teacher at my school. She found reasons to get me in trouble even though I was known for being a quiet kid.
  • I didn't really understand what she was doing, but I was always taught to respect people older than me so I didn't say anything.
  • That was before I learned about the civil war
  • The civil war was fought in the United States and it was between the northern and southern pacific sides. The fight was to secede the confederate states and have slavery abolished. This was very impactful for the African Americans who were kept there as slaves, yet still had no rights when it came to voting or living in general.
  • Without this war I'd still be working day and night with no pay for someone who couldn't care less about me.
  • But sadly some people are still living like this around the world. And when we look back at history, some people still believe this was okay.
  • Events like these has taught me to love the skin that I'm in and to stand up for what I believe in.
  • People are still racist to people of color, especially now with police brutality and the death of George Floyd.
  • Even though this war prevented some future issues in the U.S, it didn't fix everything.
  • It has also encouraged me to learn more about my history as a person of color.
  • Even though racial profiling and racism is still alive today, you can help out by supporting businesses being run by people of color.
