In 1607, 150 men sailed to North America in search of gold for the king of England, King James I. They settled in virginia and named the it Jamestown after their king.
He was not kidding about "no work no food" so lets get building!
They came to look for gold only and did not set up housing. This led to starvation, disease, and death. The first winter came and only 38 men survived.
Someone realized the problems and came up with a solution. His name was John Smith, the first leader of Jamestown. He said, "no work no food."
What are some laws for Jamestown.
They began to work by building huts to store food. The colonist were not the only people there, Powhatans natives to the land have been there long before them. The natives felt threatened and destroyed the colonist's farms and livestock. This was called the Starving Times, only 60 colonist survived.
Later on a trade relationship develops and they help each other out. John Rolfe arrives from the Caribbean and introduces tobacco. Tobacco needs a lot of work so they use the natives to plant and pick it. After the natives die from diseases they use indentured servants and then African Americans.
Now that Jamestown has a way to succeed they need structure to be able to stay. Jamestown creates the House of Burgesses which is made up of colonist. This group of colonist makes the laws for Virginia. The only people who are allowed to vote is land-owning white Virginia men. This was the first example of self-government in North America.
