  • Meeting with a mentor
  • Perseus, son of the God Zeus and a mortal mother Danae.  His mother was cast out of her home in  Argos.  They arrive at the Island of Serifos.  There they are taken care of by a fisherman, Dictys. 
  • Crossing the threshold
  • The call to adventure
  • Serifos King, Polydectes wants to marry Danae.  She does not want to marry. Polydectes thinks Perseus is getting in the way and he plots to get rid of Perseus.  He challenges Perseus to kill the Gorgon Medusa and bring back her snaked head.

  • Perseus was afraid of task because Medusa could turn anyone to stone that looked her at face.  Perseus would prove he is brave and set off on his quest.
  • This task is nearly impossible for one man I do not know how I am going to do this
  • Perseus is favored by the Gods.  He is given a mirrored shield by Athena so he could avoid looking directly at Medusa.  Hermes delivered to him an unbreakable sword. He is told he will also need winged sandals, a magic wallet and a cap of invisiblity. He must go to the 3 Gray Women who know where to find them.
  • This is a sword that can never be broken
  • Use this as a mirror to slay Medusa
  • The 3 Gray Women share an eye they pass around. Perseus takes the eye from them until they tell him where to find the 3 magic gifts.  After getting the information, Perseus travels north and meets the nymphs who guard the magic items.  The warmly greet him and give him the items.
