Prospero, the ruler of the land, was happy and strong andwise. When most of the people had died, he called to him athousand healthy friends to live in one of his palaces. Here they could forget the sickness, the Red Death.
Please come dressed in fine clothes.
Prospero askedhis friends to come together for a dancing party.
There were seven rooms where they danced. The first room was blue and had blue windows. The second room was purple and the windows were purple. The third was green, and so were the windows. The fourth was yellow.
The fifth was white. The sixth was violet, but, the seventh room was black, black as night, and the floor, too, was the same black. In this room the color of the windows was not the same. It was red. A deep blood color.
fIn the seventh room there was a strange guest. It had made himself look like the Red Death itself! His clothes were spotted with blood. And his face was coverd with spots. Now they knew that it was the Red Death itself that had come in the night. One by one the dancers fell, and each died as they fell.
