  • BETHLEHEM, PA5TH GRADE
  • FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR, WE'LL START EACH CLASS WITH MULTIPLICATION TIMED DRILLS.
  • AGENDA1. TIMED MULTIPLICATION DRILL WKST2. PROBLEMS ON P. 24 - 25
  • Abigail Rodriguez 10 5 8 9 4 X3 X5 X7 X8 X2 9 5 7 3 5 X0 X7 X3 X0 X8
  • MY FAMILY MOVED TO BETHLEHEM AND I ATTENDED TO A LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DURING 5TH GRADE. I WAS STILL PERFORMING WELL IN SCHOOL. I FELT MORE ACCEPTED AND HAD MORE FRIENDS THAN I DID AT MY OLD SCHOOL.
  • PATILLAS, PR8TH GRADE
  • EVERYTHING CHANGED ONCE WE WERE INTRODUCED TO MULTIPLICATION TABLES, AND SUBSEQUENTLY, MULTIPLICATION DRILL WORKSHEETS. I DIDN'T GRASP THE MEMORIZATION REQUIRED IN CLASS, AND QUICKLY FELL BEHIND MY CLASSMATES.
  • EVERY CLASS SESSION, MY WORKSHEETS GOT WORSE. EVENTUALLY, I JUST WROTE SHORT POEMS ON THE PAPER WHILE EVERYONE ELSE WORKED ON THEM. I WORRIED ABOUT GETTING THROUGH SCHOOL, AND LIFE, WITHOUT THIS BASIC SKILL. I WAS NEVER OFFERED EXTRA SUPPORT.
  •
  • MY FAMILY MOVED TO PUERTO RICO AT THE BEGINNING OF 8TH GRADE. I WAS EXCITING ABOUT STARTING A NEW SCHOOL IN A NEW CULTURE AND LANGUAGE.
  • THE PUERTO RICAN DEPT. OF EDUCATION PUT A HEAVY EMPHASIS ON ALL STUDENTS DOING WELL IN MATH. OUR MATH CURRICULUM AS A FEW YEARS AHEAD OF MY U.S. COUNTERPART. OUR MATH TEACHER TOOK THE TIME TO EXPLAIN (MORE THAN ONCE AND IN DIFFERENT WAYS) THE MATERIAL UNTIL MOST OF US RETAINED IT.
  •
  • MY ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATH IMPROVED SO MUCH, OUR TEACHER ALLOWED ME TO LEAD STUDY SESSIONS FOR SMALL GROUPS THAT NEEDED SOME ADDITIONAL SUPPORT.TO THIS DAY, WHEN I DO MATH IN MY HEAD, I DO IT IN SPANISH. THAT'S HOW IT WAS TAUGHT TO ME THAT MADE THE MOST SENSE.
