The end of the civil war, the burst of industrialism, and the country's rapid expansion led to the birth of local color writing, a form of regionslism. Brete Harte and Mark Twain were among the most known of these writers. Their versions of life on the frontier captured the imagination of readers in the settled areas of the east, midwest and south. For those who did not hop aboard the next train to nowhere, reading about it was the next best thing. People were fascinated about the stories of the frontier. The new regionalist literature sastified this curiosity with its honest potrayal of people living their lives.
