- Being ignorant and naive can affect decisions more than just yourself
- Weather will always win over human resilience.
- Selfish actions can lead to severe consequences
- The man throughout the story made decisions that he felt where right without listening to the advice of the others around him. His ignorance led to the endangerment of himself, but also the dog. When he was unable to build a fire to keep him and the dog warm it is important to realize that if the dog did not take action and go back to camp it would have died out in the cold.
- After all of the hardships he endured during his journey the man was no match for natures below zero temperatures. The man throughout this story continued to fight against the frigid temperatures by making fires, but in the end weather won the battle.
- The man always put his safety and well being over his companion the dog. The man showed this time and time again when he made the dog walk into dangerous situations first such as when he thought the ice was too thin and waits to make sure the dog is ok before continuing on. Ultimately this leads to the mans death because of how selfish he actually was.
