After being told the news Mary went to the kitchen and reached in the freezer for the lamb
When she returns she hits him in the head with the lamb
In order to cover herself, she goes to the grocery store and buys groceries and have a long conversation with Sam

She returns home, acts surprised, and calls the police and tells them her story
The police arrive and search the house but fail find anything so Mary offers them the lamb
haha...
Mary gave the officers the lamb and they ate it. Which means they ate the murder weapon and she got away with the murder.
The weapon is probably right under our noses!
