When the U.S. Constitution was passed, it called for separation from church and state. This new law gave Catholics the ability to freely practice.
On May 18, 1789, John Carroll was elected the first Bishop of the Catholic Church.
Waves of immigrants were the main reason for the jump in Catholic population that lasted from 1830-1920’s.
Starting in the 1850’s, anti-Catholic groups began to start riots and cause trouble for Catholics in America
During the Civil War Catholics fought on both the Union and Confederate sides.
In the nineteenth century another wave of immigrants arrived from Eastern Europe to practice the faith aswell.
