  • When the U.S. Constitution was passed, it called for separation from church and state. This new law gave Catholics the ability to freely practice.
  • On May 18, 1789, John Carroll was elected the first Bishop of the Catholic Church.
  • Waves of immigrants were the main reason for the jump in Catholic population that lasted from 1830-1920’s.
  • Starting in the 1850’s, anti-Catholic groups began to start riots and cause trouble for Catholics in America
  • During the Civil War Catholics fought on both the Union and Confederate sides.
  • In the nineteenth century another wave of immigrants arrived from Eastern Europe to practice the faith aswell.
