- Okay everyone, as you can see on the screen, this is a neutral atom of Carbon. Carbon is located in group 14, period 2 on the periodic table. Because of its location in group 14, this tells us that Carbon has 4 valence electrons in its outer shell, and is properties include having a very high boiling and melting point.
- If you look at the element tile for Carbon, it gives us information about its atomic mass, element symbol, element name, protons, neutrons, electrons, and that it is a reactive non-metal.
- Carbon in its neutral state has 6 protons, 6 electrons, and 6 neutrons in the Bohr's model.
- Here is my model of both the neutral Carbon atom, and the isotope Carbon 13 atom. Carbon 13 is considered an isotope because there is one additional neutron in its nucleus changing the atomic mass to 13 . Any questions???
