Get ready, punk. You're gonna be screaming like an opera singer in a minute." (Klavan 37)
Progress Report #3: Theme By Ryan Dougherty
Theme Development #2
They'll never find me in here.
"He must've found the stream. This way!" (Klavan 116)
The theme of my book is to never give up. This theme is used a lot throughout the story, as Charlie West refers to a quote from Winston Churchill that says to "Never give in." Charlie uses this quote to build enough confidence to escape the people who captured him and to find a safe place to get help.
Theme Development #3
"You've been making things up since the first time I talked to you. Everything you say is made up." (Klavan 220)
The theme is first introduced when Charlie finds himself in a place he does not recognize. When he realizes that he has gotten kidnapped, he starts to worry. The kidnappers are planning on killing Charlie, but he uses the Churchill quote and his brains to find a way to escape, as he breaks through the chair he was tied in and kicks the kidnapper in the groin before running off.
I can't believe we lost him again!
This theme is further developed when Charlie is escaping the men and is lost in the woods. The men have guns and dogs are chasing after Charlie, but he stays calm and does not give in to the intense situation he is in. Charlie finds a sinkhole that he can crawl into, and stays in there until the coast is clear.
After Charlie is captured again, this time by the police, he finds out how he got where he is. He was convicted of murder, and could spend his whole life in jail. When he is talking to the detective, Charlie believes that he did not murder anyone, but Detective Rose thinks he is lying. Charlie knows he is not a liar, and uses Churchill's quote to back up his responses to Rose.
"I was captured. They called themselves the Homelanders. They hurt me. They tried to kill me. Why would I make it up?" (Klavan 220)
Based on this theme, I predict that Charlie West will be able to escape the police again and find a place to stay and to find where his friends/parents are. As he is doing this, he is still using the Churchill quote to push himself in finding out what is really going on with his life.
