The newly finished railway also helped to spring up buildings, such as schools, churches, and hotels along the main line.

The Canadian Pacific Railway helped to develop towns around the East, there were many more jobs and schools, which were great for families that were settling in the West. The development of these towns and the opportunities they gave had caused the population of the West to increase rapidly.
By the 1890s, the government realized that the developing wheat and grain varieties were essential to help populate the Prairies with more settlers. Scientists at the Department of Agriculture had eventually developed a new variety of wheat called Marquis, which was much better suited for Prairie weather.
