The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Fear and Paranoia Causes People to Turn on One Another.
The theme that I choose is fear and paranoia because they can cause people to distrust one another and turn on each other. When the town started fearing the unknown they started to get paranoid. They were scared and frightened and was looking for an answer for what was going on. They were so fearful, they believe a kids story. Page 7 of the teleplay a young boy tells all the neighbors of a book he read about one of the neighbors being a alien so they started believing their neighbors was some sort of alien. For example, they thought because their neighbors car started and no one else car did, he was the alien. On page 8 of the teleplay all of the neighbors walk over to Steve house after his car started wanting to believe he was alien like in Tommy's story. Then because Steve has a radio he was working on in the basement, he was the alien. The paranoia was getting the best of the neighbors so much Charlie actually shot and killed his own neighbor. On page 14, Charlie shoots at a shadow not knowing it was his neighbor. The fear and paranoia turned the neighbors into monsters against one another.
