Storyboard Text

  • Escaping The World
  • By Taylor Schwalje
  • I can't take it anymore! I have to escape!
  • Ugh! Not more fish!
  • Bertine Bahige grew up in Bukavu, in the DRC,(Democratic Republic of the Congo). At age 13, he thought he had life all figured out. He wanted to be a Doctor. But something was dreaded to happen.
  • Quem é Você?
  • What?!?
  • Bertine was in Captivity for 2 years and hated how children would fight each other and the violence. He didn't feel safe anymore and decided to escape.
  •          While escaping Bukavu, Bertine was faced with some challenges. To escape he needed to cross a huge lake. He was offered a ride by a boat man. The only problem was Bertine had to hide under salted fish and crates for three days.  And that's what Bertine ate for three days in a row.
  • After riding the boat for three days, Bertine was exhausted. Then about faint, He collapsed by a tree. He later woke up to people crowding him. He didn't know what country he was in or what language the people were speaking. He later found out he was in Mozambique and then went to a refugee camp.
  • Translation: Who are You?
  • Then, in 2004, Bertine got moved to America and ended up in Baltimore, Maryland. When he stepped of the plane, He looked around for skyscrapers from his vision but saw none. Then he said to himself, "Now I am Safe.".
  • Now He is a principal in Wyoming. He loves helping kids and has 2 of his own. The only challenges he has is helping "At Risk Kids" but he loves helping them. He stays after school to help these kids at sports, mostly soccer and for school.  Bertine also believes he as a deeper understanding of at risk kids than other teachers.
