Celie, an 14 year old African American woman, writes letters to God daily of the eventful and horrible things happening to her. Since she was constantly raped and abused by her father, writing letters helped her cope.
With Celie constantly being raped by her father, she then gives birth to two of their kids, and is then forced into marrying a man named Albert in place of her younger sister, Nettie. Albert then abuses Celie both mentally and physically once together.
With Albert being in love with another woman, Shug Avery, he then takes her back home for Celie to nurse her back to health. As Celie and Shug get talking, Celie quickly falls in love with the woman and has a hard time controlling her feelings.
With Nettie and Shug being so close now, they both reveal the truth behind why Nettie hasn't heard from her sister who left. They find out that Albert has been hiding her letters to Celie in his locked up trunk.
Celie opens the letters and uncovers more truths behind Albert and what he's done, her father, kids, and even what Nettie is doing down in Africa.
As decades pass, Celie continues to write back to Nettie, but doesn't hear from her. Eventually, Nettie, her husband, and the kids all greet Celie, Albert, and Shug at the front steps of her home. After all of that time, they are finally reuinited.
