Storyboard Text

  • The Green Knight appears at King Arthur's court during a feast.
  • "Splendid that errant knight stood in a splay of green,/ And green, too, was the mane of his mighty destrier" (Lines 1-2).
  • A proposition is made by the Green Knight challanging them to a game.
  • "And so all I ask of this court is a Christmas game... he dares to stoutly exchange one stroke for another" (Lines 65, 69).
  • Sir Gaiwan chops the Green Knights ax down and slices his head off. This is the first part of this challenge.
  • "...and he hefted it high... And then, swiftly, he slashed at the naked neck" (Lines 146-148). 
  • The other part of the challenge is Sir Gaiwan has to stay at the Green Knight's castle while he goes hunting. 
  • "The lord proposes that he will go out to hunt... they will exchange what they have won" (Page 216).
  • While Gaiwan is in the castle, the Lord'swife persuades him to take a green sash that will hep him on the day he has to be slashed in the head by an ax.
  • "For the man who goes to battle in this green lace,/ As long as he keeps it looped around him,/ No man under heaven can hurt him" (Lines 232-234).
  • The Knight attempts to chop Gaiwan's head off. He is unable to because of the sash he wars that protects him from harm.
  • "He raises the ax up lightly flashes it down... But hard as he hammered it down, it hurt him no more" (Lines 301,303).
