  • You have been chosen to be the the receiver of memory.
  • 1. At the end of school go to the Annex. 2. Go to dwelling after training 3. You are exempted from rules governing rudeness. 4. Do not discuss training with anyone. 5. Prohibited from dream-telling 6. Do not take any medication unless it is for illness or injuries. 7. You are not permitted to apply for release. 8. You may lie.

  • Jonas' assignment was the receiver of memory. It was the most important job in the community.
  • Jonas had 8 rules that he had to follow for his assignment. He was very surprised by rules 3 and 8. 
  • I hope he doesn't see the things in my purse.
  • The main difference between the Givers home and the rest of the community is the Giver's door was locked. Also, Jonas noticed how the Giver had books besides the ones that he had at home. The Giver's home was also furnished more luxuriously.
  • The first memory Jonas had was snow. He experienced coldness, hills, and sleds. The second memory was sunshine and he felt heat and the warmth of the sun. The last memory was sunburn and was the first memory of pain he experienced.
  • The community is not allowed to make decisions because the community might make the wrong choices. Safety and comformety are the most important things in their comminity.
  • Seeing beyond means to see things that the Giver transmits to him in the real world. Jonas realized he had the ability when he started seeing the color red.
