  • Climate is the average weather over the years.
  • In the past climate wasn't always the same. One example is the ice age. During this time, the earth's climate repeatedly changed between very cold periods, during which glaciers covered large parts of the world , and very warm periods during which many of the glaciers melted.
  • Scientists and geologists find out about past climates by using tree rings.Trees contain some of nature's most accurate evidence of the past. Each year, a tree adds to its girth, the new growth being called a tree ring. The most recently formed tree ring is the new wood near the outer part of a tree's trunk, just beneath the bark. The oldest rings are smaller and near the center.
  • The shape of Earth’s orbit around the sun goes from more circular to more of an oval. This affects the earth because the earth gets farther from the sun making it colder.
  • Volcanoes can pollute the air when they erupt. A volcanic eruption can emit particulate matter and gasses into the atmosphere.
  • Cold ocean currents carry cold and dry air, which brings cool and dry weather. Warm ocean currents bring warm air masses to wherever they flow, which leads to warm and moist weather.
