Odysseus and his men set sail. They are going to Troy. In the text it says, "As we rowed on, and nearer to the mainland, at one end of the bay, we saw a cavern yawning above the water, screened with laurel, and many rams and goats about the place inside a sheepfold—made from slabs of stone..."

The men want to take the food and resources but Odysseus says they should wait for the owner of said food to return.
The owner of the cave is a giant cyclops who traps the men in the cave and eats some. In the text it says, "cyclops went on filling up his bellywith manflesh and great gulps of whey"
Odysseus's plan is to be friendly toward the Cyclops and offer him liquor so that he falls asleep. Odysseus says , "Cyclops, try some wine. Here’s liquor to wash down your scraps of men."
Once Cyclops is asleep, the men blind cyclops with a sharp stick. The text describes the eye as, "Eyelid and lash were seared; the pierced ball hissed broiling, and the roots popped." This, of course, upset the cyclops and he says he won't let the men out.
The cyclops feels for the tops of the sheep when he lets them out so he knows the men won't escape. The men tie themselves to the sheep so they can leave unnoticed.
