  • "An accidental death in training, another life for the queen to tell, a fitting death.."
  • "Cal's leading us! His own legion, all the way to the front!"

  • This relates to the them "anyone can betray anyone" because this scene shows that at anytime, the king and queen can kill and betray her whenever they want.
  • This relates to the theme "Anyone can betray anyone" when cal lied to Mare. He isn't going back to their palace, instead, he is going to war leaving Mare. This is sad and shocking to Mare. She feels betrayed.
  • "Instructor Arven, the silence, the one who can make us human, stands behind me, pushing down all of my strength until i am nothing more than a weeping girl again.
  • The theme "Anyone can betray anyone" is shown in this scene when Mare and Maven are about to following up on a plan against silvers, against Maven's own kind. They have to betray the queen so they can do it.
  • Maven betrayed Mare during the whole book. During this moment, she connects the dots and relizes it. He was never a true friend, he faked it all just so he can be king and kill her and his family (except the queen).

  • "Anyone can betray anyone" is shown in this scene when Mare's friend who was her training instructor, did not only not take her side and help Mare, but takes the Queens side and does what she says. He betrays Mare.
  • The king's family betrayed him. His son Cal killed him by being controlled by his wife, the queen. Maven planned the whole thing and Mare was stuck and couldn't do anything. "Anyone can betray anyone" is shown here.
