  • In the south they thought the government had to much power an wanted to secede, but the north wanted the central government to have more power. The south wanted lower tariffs but the north wanted higher tariffs.

  • Although many smaller farmers didn't want to secede, but Georgia seceded when the general assembly voted.

  • The Missouri Compromise allowed the Congress to be balanced.

  • The election of 1860, the Dred Scott case, and the unequal balance in the Senate intensified the disputes over slavery.
