  • Hello, and good morning class! As you all know my name is Ms. Francisco .Today we are learning how to classify a figure  as  polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals.
  • Okay, class does anyone want to take a guess what the first shape should be classified under? No one?Really?Let me go more in depth first.
  • If you don't understand at first what these terms such as , polygon ,quadrilateral ,and triangle mean .that's fine you are just learning . A polygon is a close sided figure with more than three sides .Well that's all for today come back tomorrow to learn what a quadrilateral is!
  • On the board you can see that Ms.Francisco has drawn some shapes or figures. But you may be thinking "Well how do you figure out if it's  a polygon,a triangle,or a quadrilateral",well that's today's lesson!
  • To classify as shape you first need to know what the shape that your dealing with is .The first shape on the board is a square .Now the next thing you have to do is count the sides. Remember that a polygon is a shape/figure that has more then 3 side so of course I don't have all the figures that are able to go under these categories .However, when doing so, you need to count the sides. But with the example I'm using its a square so it has four equal sides .Keep in mind that when classifying these shapes they can go under more than one category , so in our case the square would go under both polygon and quadrilateral .
  • A quadrilateral is a figure with four close sides .For example , there are four quadrilaterals and no I did not do that on purpose .If you did not know the word "quad" means four which can help you remember what a quadrilateral is.
  • If you couldn't already guess the four that are quadrilaterals are the square, the trapezoid, the rhombus, and the rectangle. They each have four equal sides and they are all closed figures also they all have angles .
  • Now for the triangles ,the attributes of triangles are that they all have to have three sides must be a close sided figure. Three  of these shapes are triangles .And the one shape we didn't talk about is the pentagon on the end its only a polygon because it doesn't have four sides and its not a triangle because it has five sides not four.
  • You now know how to classify shapes based off of the number of sides, angles ,and whether its a closed figure or not. Class dismissed!
