  • Gretel has golden pigtails.
  • Gretel is very happy.
  • Gretel has a very colorful outfit on.
  • Gretel is proudly displaying her doll.
  • Pavel
  • "Don't make it worse by thinking it's more painful than it actually is."
  • Pavel is confused at Bruno's questions.
  • Pavel is forlorn because he wishes to be a doctor.
  • He has dirt and stains on his clothes.
  • Pavel has grey hair because he is old.
  • Bruno is nine years old. We are reading the book through his perspective. Bruno is very angry that the family is moving away from their beloved home. Bruno is important because he finds something peculiar out of his window. His role in the book is to be a very curious child. He also really wants to move back to his old house.
  • Lieutenant Kotler.
  • Kotler is a big show off.
  • He has blonde flowing hair.
  • Kotler is flirtatious with gretel.
  • She is very quiet and doesn't show emotion.
  • Gretel is three years older than Bruno which means she is twelve. Gretel has a large collection of dolls and plays with them a lot. Gretel and Bruno don't exactly like each other, but sometimes they enjoy each other's company.  Gretel's role in the novel is Bruno's older sister and a topic of discussion for Bruno. A significant action occurred when she was flirting with Lieutenant Kotler. She feels optimistic about the new house, but still misses her friends.
  • Maria
  • "You must never say something like that about your father."
  • His actual age is not confirmed, but Bruno describes him as a senior. A very significant action was when he went outside and carried Bruno inside so that he could clean his wounds. His role in the novel is the family cook. He is sad that he works at Out-With because he wants to be a doctor.
  • Shmuel
  • "I should have eaten them when you offered them, now it's too late, if I take them he'll come in and-."
  • Kotler is about 18 years old. He works with Bruno's dad at Out-with. He is a bit full of himself and likes to show-off. He is very flirtatious and Gretel just adore's him. Kotler feels the need to prove himself to Bruno's dad. Because of this, Kotler often treats the Jews and workers very poorly. Kotler and mother had an affair. Due to this unnecessary behavior, Kotler was sent away.
  • "And afterwards, when you return to the kitchen, make sure you wash your hands before touching any of the food, you filthy-."
  • He is wearing his crisp uniform.
  • Maria is about Father's age. Her role in the book is the family maid. She is very honest and quiet. She is very thankful of Bruno's dad for all that he has done for her. At one point in the story, Bruno and Maria are having a very serious discussion about father. Bruno badmouths father and Maria gets super defensive. Maria feels that she needs to do everything she is asked to do. She is very kind and caring.

  • Maria does what Bruno asks.
  • Shmuel is the same age as Bruno, which means he is 9. Shmuel's role in the novel is Bruno's best friend on the other side of the fence. Shmuel is very quiet. He seems a little bit sad to be so cooped up. A significant action is when he is at Bruno's house cleaning dishes. When Lieutenant Kotler bursts in, Shmuel starts to cry. Another significant action that Shmuel is involved in is when he and Bruno go into a gas chamber and die after exploring.
