Bruno is a nine year old boy who plays as the main character in the story. Bruno is very curious about the mysterious people who live on the other side of the fence. He has become good friends with the boy named Shmuel, although, because Bruno’s father is a Commandant, it creates great danger for both Bruno and Shmuel.
Pavel is old and frail

Gretel is the 13-year-old sister of Bruno. She is very mean to Bruno and takes his short height and immaturity as a source of entertainment, even though Gretel is very immature herself. Gretel had a collection of dolls which she rearranges and plays with constantly, because of her lack of friends at Out-With.
Kotler had shiny golden blonde hair.
"Lieutenant Kotler grew very angry with Pavel and no one—not Bruno, not Gretel, not Mother and not even Father—stepped in to stop him doing what he did next, even though none of them could watch. Even though it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale.
Bruno’s father is a Commandant, which is the main reason why his family had moved to Out-With. He is a very serious man and expects his children to follow his orders. He thinks that the people who live on the other side of the fence aren’t people at all and tells that to Bruno.
Shmuel is very small and skinny.
"Smuel bit his lip and said nothing. He had seen Bruno's fath
Pavel works for Bruno’s family. He peels the vegetable and serves them their food. When Bruno had fallen off of the tire swing he had taken care of him. Later, he fumbled while giving Kotler wine and was severely punished for spilling the wine. He’s the grandfather of Shmuel.

Lieutenant Kotler is strong, but not as strong as Bruno's father.
