  • "'I used   to live  with my auntie. She kept a candy store. I used to get ever so many candies. As many as I liked'" (Page 9).
  • "He patted the palm trunk softly, and, forced at last to believe in the reality of the island, laughed delightedly again and stood on his head" (Page 10).
  • "From the pig-run came the quick, hard patter of hooves, a castanet sound, seductive, maddening--the promise of meat. He rushed out of the undergrowth and snatched up his spear" (Page 49).
