Storyboard Text

  • Grandpa, what was the Cold War?
  • Warsaw Pact?
  • The Cold War described the tension between the USA and Warsaw Pact after WW2.
  • It was a military alliance between communist nations.
  • The Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan were developed during that time. Right, grandpa?
  • Right! The doctrine was the policy to aid people threatened by Soviet/communist enemies.
  • Communist saw this as a threat and this was the kickstart to the Cold War.
  • The Marshall Plan gave over $13billion dollars to western European countries.
  • Did we do anything else trying to protect us against communism and the Soviet Union?
  • Actually, there was the Red Scare that first appeared before the Cold War and during the Cold war.  People were scared of the rise of communist.
  • The government deported hundreds of immigrants because of this fear.
  • What about during the Cold war, grandpa? Did America do anything then?
  • I don't know what that is at all grandpa.
  • Of course, we also had HUAC and McCarthyism.
  • HUAC was an investigation committee of House of Representatives watching for any communist/fascist activities.
  • Were there any famous Communist leaders during that time?
  • McCarthyism was named after Joseph McCarthy who accused many people of being communist.
  • The US wanted to keep containment, meaning they wanted to keep communism from spreading.
  • So McCarthyism was the allegations of communist in the US, carried out by McCarthy.
  • Thanks, grandpa for the little history lessons.
  •  Well, there was Joseph Stalin who governed the Soviet Union.
  • Also, Mao Zedong who was a Chinese communist influencer too.
