Storyboard Text

  • Abel Tasman heads away from the new land, which subsequently gets named “Nieuw Zeeland” after Zeeland in the Netherlands.
  • In 1768 the British decided to explore the Pacific region further and send Captain James in the ship Endeavour (it is on our 50c coin).
  • 6 October 1769 a cabin boy called Nick sights land. Young Nick’s Head at Poverty Bay is named after him.
  • The Endeavour is met by Māori canoes and some Māori and Europeans are killed.
  • Captain Cook anchored at the top of the South Island in Queen Charlotte Sound and discovered the Cook Strait (which was named after him!)
  • Captain Cook then sailed through the strait confirming there were 2 separate islands and then down and around Stewart Island.
