Abel Tasman heads away from the new land, which subsequently gets named “Nieuw Zeeland” after Zeeland in the Netherlands.
In 1768 the British decided to explore the Pacific region further and send Captain James in the ship Endeavour (it is on our 50c coin).
6 October 1769 a cabin boy called Nick sights land. Young Nick’s Head at Poverty Bay is named after him.
The Endeavour is met by Māori canoes and some Māori and Europeans are killed.
Captain Cook anchored at the top of the South Island in Queen Charlotte Sound and discovered the Cook Strait (which was named after him!)
Captain Cook then sailed through the strait confirming there were 2 separate islands and then down and around Stewart Island.
