part 2

Storyboard Text

  • The second step of photosynthesis is the processing of raw materials to form glucose and oxygen.
  • This step is called the Calvin Cycle, which is also known as the light independent or dark reactions. This is because no sunlight is needed for the step to happen.
  • The Calvin Cycle occurs when the molecules of carbon dioxide and water are taken apart, rearranged, and recombined using the energy I use from the sunlight to make glucose and oxygen.
  • The Calvin Cycle is names after Melvin Calvin. In 1937, he discovered this process alongside his colleagues at the University of California.
  • Equation for Photosynthesis:
  • Carbon dioxide + water --> Glucose + Oxygen
  • 6CO2 + 6H2O --> C6H12O6 + 6O2
  • OR
  • Oxygen is released as a waste product, and it leaves through my stomata. This is good because humans and many animals need the oxygen.
  • Overall Idea / Purpose:
  • The process of photosynthesis has stored the energy of sunlight for later use
  • Glucose is used by the cell immediately or stored for growth or later use.
