There were two types of people, Border Ruffians- activists for slavery, and then there were abolitionists- people against slavery. The pro-slavery side decided to ransack Lawrence, Kansas, (a place created by the antislavery people). This event was called the, "Sack of Lawrence".
This is it, the Pottawatomie Massacre. John Brown was an abolitionist that believed God wanted him to fight slavery. He also had the wrong impression that the proslavery posse in Lawrence, killed five men. So, he sought revenge. May 24th, Brown and his followers took five men, (proslavery), hacked off their hands and stabbed them with broadswords.
Unfortunately, occurrences after the Pottawatomie Massacre, weren't any better. Many violent protests broke out killing roughly 200 people.
