Kansas/Nebraska act- On January 23, 1854, Douglas introduced a bill in Congress to divide the area into two territories: Nebraska in the north and Kansas in the south. If passed, it would repeal the Missouri Compromise and establish popular sovereignty for both territories. This caused tension because of the idea of slavery.
People raced for land and property in Kansas to tilt the influence of the territory for the North or South.
“Come on, then, gentlemen of the Slave States. . . . We will engage in competition for the virgin soil of Kansas and God give the victory to the side that is stronger in numbers as it is in right." -William Seward
Led by Missouri senator David Atchison, "Border Ruffians" crossed Missouri into Kansas to illegally vote in favor of Pro-slavery candidates.
We need slavery!
"The Sack of Lawrence" was an incident where a proslavery grand jury decided that an anti-slavery town named Lawernce was full of traitors and had to be arrested. Sometime later, a posse of some 800 men sacked and burned down the whole town.
Hack off their hands and stab them with broadswords!!
After the Sack of Lawrence, a man named John Brown took it upon himself to take revenge on proslavers. This incident would later be named "The Pottawatomie Massacre". In 1859, during a couple of raids against proslavers, he was caught and hanged to death.
In reaction to the Pottawatomie Massacre and other actions done by John Brown, Slavery supporters across Kansas massacred some 200 people including men and women. Not only were they killed by their own people, John Brown fled into hiding while they fought for themselves. This is now known as "Bleeding Kansas", where it has become a violent battlefield of a civil war.
