Bruno is 9 and is very spoiled. He is dissapointed that his house isn't five stories. He plays the main role in the story because the story is told around him. He doesn't really understand what is going on during this time. He also is much more nice to he maid then Gretel.
"Lieutenant Kotler grew very angry with Pavel and no one-not Bruno, not Gretel, not Mother, and not even Father-stepped into stop him doing what he did next, even though none of them could watch."
He is a Nazi
Gretel is almost thirteen. She is very disrespectful to Maria. She has been caught crushing on one of the lieutenants. she plays a medium role in the story and is pretty important to the story. Gretel has the same understanding as Bruno does with the whole situation going on in this time period until the ending of the book.
Mother is unstable in the end

Shmuel and Bruno are the same age and have the exact same birthday. Shmuel plays one of the biggest roles in the book but doesn't show up in the book for a while. He is a little aware of what is going on. His biggest action in the story is when Shmuel and Bruno go into the chamber together and say they are best friends.
"Father was not usually the type of man to give anyone a hug, unlike Mother and Grandmother, who gave them a little too often for comfort ."
Lieutenant Kotler's age is late teens. One of his roles in the story is kind of the bad guy because from the perspective of the main character he is evil. He has Nazi views on how Jews are horrible people. He is the killer of one of the semi-important character Pavel.
He has very blonde hair
He is well dressed.
Kotler is a very mean person.
Mother is a middle aged women. She does not support the fury's decision to move them to Out-With. She is a relatively nice character. Her role is not very big but she is much more open-minded towards the maids around the house. Most of her feelings have been very sad towards the whole moving away.
She is very depressed.

Father in the book is a middle-aged man who plays a medium-sized role in the book. He is part of the Nazi party as a Commandant. His actions of shadowing Bruno from what truly is going on in the world. Because of his actions Bruno dies. . A big action that he did was shame Kotler at the dinner table.

He thinks Nazis are good and Germany is superior to all
