''TRUE! nervous, very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why WILL you say that I am mad?
Hearken! and observe how healthily, how calmly, I can tell you the whole story.
I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me an insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! YES!! Whenever it fell upon me my blood ran cold. It haunted me and thus I had to rid myself of the eye forever.
For seven nights I crept into his room, but he had always been asleep when I arrived. Since I could not see the hideous eye, the deed could not be near started. Like I said prior the old man did not vex me. It was only the eye.
I ADMIT THE DEED!! HERE! HERE! TEAR UP THE PLANKS! IT IS THE BEATING OF HIS HIDEOUS HEART!
The eighth night was different however, a slight noise I had made seemed to awaken the old man form his slumber. His open eye made me furious. I waited patiently. I could feel the old man's fear of what had made the noise. With with one loud yell I leaped onto the man and suffocated him until his beating heart was no more.
I completely dismembered the corpse. Cutting off the head, arms, and legs. Not a drop of blood had stained the floor or rugs. The bathroom tub had been sure of that. I hid the pieces under the planks installed in the floor. Just as I finished I heard knocking at the front door. It had been three police men sent by a concerned neighbor after hearing a loud yell.
What was there to fear? I welcomed them in and they searched the house. The old man had been on a trip outside the country as far as they knew. I invited them to sit. Then, I heard a LOUD heartbeat. IT WAS NOT WITHIN MY OWN EARS. HOW could they NOT hear it?? WERE THEY MOCKING ME? The feeling was so awful I HAD TO LET OUT THE TRUTH OF WHERE THEY CORPSE LAY.
