  • Langston was born on February 1,1902 in Joplin Missouri.He was raised by his grandmother because his parents seperated soon after his birth.his father went to Mexico and his mother moved around during his youth
  • First publishing
  • Hughes grandmother died in his early teens,from that point he went to live with his mother and they moved to several cities before settling in Cleveland,Ohio. It was during this time that he began to write poetry.
  • Legacy
  • Langston worked various jobs he met poet Vachel lindsey in a job as a bus boy and she promoted his poems to a wider audience.His poem the weary blues won a prize he also got a scholarship to go to Lincoln University 
  • Death
  • After his graduation from Lincoln he published his 1rst novel the weary blues.He than commited to being writer and published countless works including the 2nd installment of I wonder as I wander.
  • Hughes harlem home,on east 127th street,received NYC landmark status in 1981 and was added to the National register of places in 1982.
  • Langston hughes died on May 22,1962 from Prostate cancer.His funeral contained not much talking but was filled with jazz and blues music
