  • Constitution   we the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense,
  • Thomas Jefferson was an antifederalist, which meant that he didn't completely support the Constitution. In his opinion, there should be stronger state governments and a weaker national government, in order to ensure that a tyrannical government never formed.
  • Louisiana Purchase
  • The Declaration of Independence was written during the second Continental Congress. This meeting took place in the Pennsylvania State House in Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. The document was written by Thomas Jefferson along with some others, who edited his work. On July 4, 1776, the Colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.
  • Abolition of Slave Trade
  • Thomas Jefferson believed that the Constitution was a very strict document. Jefferson also did not believe in implied powers. Therefore, when Jefferson bought land from the French, implying the powers of the president because nowhere in the constitution does it say that a president can purchase land, he was being a hypocrite to his previous words.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition
  • The French were fighting a battle in Europe to control more land. As wars cost money, France needed all the money it could get, resulting in them selling the land they owned in the New World to America. Thomas Jefferson who was the president at the time bought the land for 15 million dollars, doubling the amount of land in America.

  • In 1807, signed a law that abolished the importing of slaves. This happened three weeks before the British abandoned the Atlantic Trade. By doing this it ensured that slavery would eventually end, but what Jefferson had not known was how slaveholders would start breeding slaves in order to make more.
  • Shortly after the Louisianna purchase, Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the uncharted territory that America had just acquired. Their mission was to find a practical route across the West for safe passage, ensuring that the land was acceptable to be inhabited.
