And Im not coming back to that bastard baby
While trying ot find a house the mother avoids having landlords see her child for fear of housing discrimination. During this time she asks Lula Ann to call her "Sweetness" so no one knows that they are related by blood.

In her old age in Winston house, Lula Ann has ceased most contact with Sweetness and Sweetness sits and ponders upon her parenting. This is situational irony in the story because for Lula Anns life her mother was the one that didnt want to be with her but now in time Sweetness is the one being rejected by Lula Ann.
At the end of the story Lula Ann sends her mother updates on her life through letters but never going into details and never giving her address. These letters act as a symbol of her detachment from her mother.
