After Soviets crushed reform movements in 1968 they used repression to maintain control. Very few writers, and other intellectuals attempted to oppose the government, but they didn't do much.
In 1988 and 1989 mass protests took place in Prague with crowds as large as 500,000 people. The Communist government of Czechoslovakia fell. One of the writers named Vaclav Havel became president.
In 1993 Czechoslovakia peacefully decided to split into the Czech Republic lead by Vaclav Havel, and Slovakia lead by Michal Kovac.
