In 1835, a Mexican force led by Santa Anna laid siege to the former mission. Texan volunteer soldiers were able to hold down for 13 days before being overpowered.

Sam Houston's forces defeated Santa Anna, forcing Santa Anna to recognize Texan Independence. Houston became the first president of Texas. Citizens wanted Texas to become a state over fear Mexico might try to re-establish its rule over Texas.

Pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces battled over the issue of slavery's expansion into Texas. In 1845, Texas becomes the 28th state.
