King Phillip II of Spain was Catholic, and was upset with the Protestants ruling England, and decided to send the Spanish Armada.
The Spanish Armada was much larger and much more powerful than England's ships.
Queen Elizabeth was the current Ruler, and Phillip had attacked mainly because she was protestant and had also rejected a marriage proposal.
England began the fight by sending three burning ships to collide with the Spanish ships and light them on fire.
A large storm arrived, and many of Spain's large ships were destroyed or forced to flee.
Spain began to go into decline while England remained a powerful country. The defeat of the Spanish Armada was a major victory for the protestants.
