Progress report #3: Theme
"I thought about Sadie's group, with their contraband internet, their mystery trips to the woods, the way I never saw Nick or charlie hanging around in the TV lounge in their sweatpants. When I'd first arrived I thought they were trouble makers and that breaking the rules was wrong. But now the idea of getting in trouble sounded appealing." Page 104-105
The theme of Extraordinary Means is seek adventure. Lane had always been a well behaved student. He never took any risks until he got to Latham and met Sadie. He realizes that seeking adventure makes his situation a lot better.
Lane is in his dorm room during his break period. He sees Sadie,Nick and their other friends sneak into the woods when they are not supposed to. Lane can't help but admire them for breaking the rules when Latham has very strict rules.
After Lane is told that he needs to stick to the schedule and the rules by Dr. Barons, he starts to feel trapped. He feels like just another patient at Latham. He now understands why Sadie, Nick, Charlie, and Marina break the rules.
