Melody has a condition called cerebral palsy. She starts public school for the first time and goes to a special needs program class. However, she gets offered the opportunity to join regular classes and gets excited to learn new information.
Melody goes to her neighbors house, Mrs. V, where she orders a new computer called the Medi-Talker which allows her to communicate. In the past she has never been able to speak to anyone. But now with her computer, she excitedly wants to talk to the students in her class.
Hi my name is Melody!
After joining a school academics team called Whiz Kids, Melody competes in her first competition. With her amazing intelligence, she carries her team which leads to them winning the competition and qualifying for nationals. As a result of her competing, many reporters ask her questions and she is featured in the newspaper.
Melody wins it for her team!
While on their way to nationals, the flight attendant tells Melody and her family that her teammates already left on an early flight because their original flight got canceled. In anger, Melody's father punches the wall and Melody becomes very upset at herself and her teammates.
I'm sorry, the flight is canceled
Because of all the stress Melody's mother has been in, she unknowingly backed up and ran into Melody's sister, Penny. Melody instantly thinks its her fault for this occurring but Mrs. V assures her that it was not her fault. After going to the hospital, Penny only has a broken leg.
At the end of the book, Melody accepts who she is. She knows that she is smart and learns to love herself.
