Storyboard Text

  • Anagnorisis
  • Oedipus: I stand revealed at last- cursed in my birth, cursed in marriage, cursed in the lives I cut down with these hands! (1308).
  • Nemesis
  • Oedipus: I stopped the sphinx! With no help from the birds, the flight of my own intelligence hit the mark. (452).
  • Catharsis
  • Oedipus: I think I've just called down a dreadful curse upon myself- I simply didn't know! (820).
  • Anagnorisis is when a character realizes their true fate, nature, or the nature of someone else. Oedipus experiences Anagnorisis in this scene when he accepts his horrible fate.
  • Nemesis is a situation of poetic justice where the good characters are rewarded and the evil characters are punished for their acts. Oedipus' hubris is his nemesis, for his foolish and selfish acts of conceit lead to him doing what he fears most- killing his father- as his unavoidable puishment.
  • Catharsis is when the audience feels fear or pity for the characters. This is shown when Oedipus comes to a realization that he cursed himself. This is a horrible situation, that made a big impact on Oedipus, the audience, and the plot as a whole.
