Storyboard Text

  • Flashback
  • Personification
  • Simile
  • Quote from the story (Plath 241)
  • At the beginning of the story, Millicent is sitting on a woodpile in a basement. At this time, she has a flashback. The whole story is her flashback. At the end of the story, the flashback ends and she makes her decision about not being in the sorority. (The flashback is almost the whole story so there's no quote).
  • Character
  • Quote from the story (Plath 240)
  • "The bus was swinging into the station." This is an example of personification because a bus cannot swing. Quote from the story (Plath 246)
  • Symbol
  • "A year or two ago, not many people would have guessed it. Millicent had waited a long time for acceptance, longer than most. It was as if she had been sitting for years in a pavilion outside a dance floor, looking in through the windows at the golden interior, with the lights clear and the air like honey, wistfully watching the couples waltzing to the never-ending music, laughing in pairs and groups together, no one alone."
  • Theme
  • "How horrible it would be if one never changed... if she were condemned to be the plain, shy Millicent of a few years back for the rest of her life." Millicent was a shy girl who has been searching for acceptance her whole life.
  • The Heather Bird is a symbol in the story Initiation. The Heather Bird symbolizes being unique and being yourself.
  • The theme of the story is that you should learn to accept yourself before others accept you. You should be yourself and others will like you because of who you actually are.
