  • Foreshadowing
  • Irony
  • Imagery
  • The author uses foreshadowing when Montresor pulls a trowel from his pocket, which is used by stonemasons, when asked if he is a mason. He would only use this when he is building up the wall for Fortunato.
  • Mood
  • The author shows irony by giving the character who dies the name "Fortunato" because he isn't so fortunate when he dies.
  • Symbolism
  • The author uses imagery when deeply describing the catacombs, making you get a much better idea of what it would be like to be there.
  • Tone
  • The author uses mood when Montresor acts depressed in the end because he wanted to hear Fortunato suffer more, and says his heart grew sick.
  • Symbolism is used in Montresor's family motto because it symbolizes that you shouldn't mess with him because he'll get payback eventually.
  • The use of tone is portrayed because the Montresor chooses to kill Fortunato in the catacombs, which is already a dark, eerie, and unhappy place by itself, so it just becomes even more so.
