  • Sam, what's natural selection?
  • Well Megan, natural selection is a process which organisms adapt so they can better survive and thrive in their environment. It consists of 4 big features.
  • What are the features?
  • First, there's genetic variation which is basically when genes change in a organism from mutations, but the changes help them to better survive. Then there's overproduction which is when populations grow until they run out of resources.
  • Oohh, what are the other features?
  • Well, there's also adaptation and survival of the fittest. Adaptations are produced by natural selection and are the different common features that organisms have to be more likely to survive. Survival of the fittest is when organisms have random mutations but it also makes it more likely that they will survive and reproduce.
  • Interesting. I don't know if I have ever met another species with special features.
  • It's not really considered special for them. It's common because it helps them survive. Like for us we have fur as an adaptation as well as other animals to help us survive in the cold.
  • Oh that makes sense now! Thanks Sam!
  • Yep, no problem Megan.
