During their conversation Zaroff brought up and interesting conversation. Zaroff had talked about a different game he hunted. He offered to show Rainsford the heads of his new species, but Rainsford refused.
During Rainsford's conversation Zaroff had told him that he hunted humans and wanted Rainsford to join him. Rainsford was disgusted by the idea and refused.
When Rainsford refused he immediately wanted to leave so Zaroff made him a deal. Zaroff proposed that he would give Rainsford a full day to run off and if he could survive for three days without Zaroff killing him he could leave. Without wasting a second more Rainsford took off.
The first day Rainsford tried to outwit Zaroff by attempting to make himself untraceable then hiding in a tree. Zaroff had traced Rainsford and found him. Zaroff made it known to Rainsford that he knew he was there.
Rainsford had set a series of traps to outwit Zaroff, Ivan, and the vicious hounds. Rainsford's traps had killed Ivan and injured Zaroff's shoulder resulting in Zaroff going home to rest. After Zaroff had rested he had tracked and ran Rainsford down.
In desperate need to get away from Zaroff, Rainsford jumped off a cliff and survived. Zaroff did not believe Rainsford survived and started his journey back home. Rainsford got out of the water and went to Zaroff's home and waited patiently for him.
