  • "She could sec now that what she was sitting on was a woodpile next to the furnace." (Plath 1)

  • "It was as if she had been sitting for years in a pavilion outside a dance floor, looking in through the windows a the golden interior with the lights clear and the air like honey, wistfully watching the couples waltzing to the never-ending music, laughing in pairs and groups together, no one alone." (Plath 3)

  • "And then, for some reason, Millicent thought of the heather birds." (Plath9)
  • The beginning and end of this story takes place with Millicent sitting on a woodpile. During her time on the woodpile she has a flashback to her initiation. The importance of this flashback is that is shows she is being reflective and thinking about her final decision.
  • Theme
  • This shows that Millicent has never been excepted before. She now feels welcome. She will treasure this moment.
  • Character
  • "It would be rather fun for a change, Millicent mused, getting her books out of her locker in the hall, rather exciting to be part of a closely knit group, the exclusive set at Lansing High." (Plath 3)
  • Millicent all along wanted to be a heather bird and e able to fly freely and be herself. While, if she would be a sparrow, all the same, wouldn't have fun. In the end, she becomes a heather bird like she always wanted.

  • Millicent started getting second thoughts about joining the sorority. She would leave behind Tracey, and Herb. It was then she decided not to join the sorority.
  • "And then, for some reason, Millicent thought of the heather birds. Swooping carefree over the moors, they would go singing and crying out across the great spaces of air, dipping and darting, strong and proud in their freedom and their sometime loneliness. It was then that she made her decision." (Plath 9)
  • Millicent had always wanted be do something exciting and be a part of a group in the beginning of the story. In the end, she decides that she doesn't want to be a part of a group that will tell her what to do. She is happy that she can be herself.
  • This quote shows that she is happy with her decision and is ready to take on a new challenge. Her "initiation" for high school is now beginning so she must prepare for that.
  • "And she knew that her own private initiation had just begun." (Plath 10)
