Juana is the wife of Kino and the mother of Coyotito. She looks after Coyotito and makes food for her husband and helps him work.
Coyotito is the victim in the story and is stung by a scorpion in which he is in need of medical assisstance.
The doctor is lazy and doesn't care for his patients and only works for money. In the story he turns down Kino when he needs help but doesn't have any money but when he hears Kino has found the pearl he rushes over to help telling him he wasn't home when Kino came. He poisoned the baby even though it had already healed and the doctor tricked Kino into needing his help.
The buyer is the person who decides how much the great pearl is worth. In the story he looks at the pearl and offers 1,000 pesos. Kino says he will take it to the capiatal and the buyer calls in the other three who agree with him saying it is fools gold. At last Kino cried out "I have been cheated" and the buyers push to 1,500 pesos but Kino leaves with the pearl.
Kino is the main character of the story he is the finder of the great pearl and the bearer of the pain it brings. In the story Kino is living peacefully with his family when a deadly scorpion stings his son Coyotito. They go to the doctor who turns him down. He then goes to work knowing he needs to find a pearl to save his sons life. While pearl diving he finds the great pearl of the world. He is tricked into accepting the doctors medicine and having to pay him. He tries to sell the pearl but has no luck and the pearl is already tearing him apart.
The priest is the religious figure of the story and warns Kino what danger could come of this great pearl. That it could drive Kino mad. He visits Kino to give him advice.
