Storyboard Text

  • After the King made little effort to help the poor, the peasants rioted in the streets and asked for change in their living conditions. They were unhappy because the rich had to pay little or no taxes, while they had to pay many.
  • The King is doing nothing to help us!
  • Let's go to the city and protest
  • Peasants could now vote and they created the list of grievances. This was taken to the Estates General by their elected representatives. They did not call for Revolution, but instead reforms.
  • Let's add to the list
  • Less noble privileges!
  • No tithes!
  • Less taxes!
  • They lost their trust in the King when he tried to flee to Varennes. They wanted an end to monarchy and war. Their wars were so expensive it plunged them into debt. They ended up being successful and suspended the monarchy.
  • No monarchy!
  • My children shouldn't be drafted for war! We'll go further into debt!
  • Why should we help the King when he tried to flee?
  • The government de christianized France. Most of the Churches rights were taken. This was supposed to help France, but the peasants were now given no aid. The government was too bankrupt to help them.
  • Stop! We need them they help us!
  • We don't need the Church!
  • Although the French Revolution did not help the peasants financially, it did help them politically. Napoleon Bonaparte came to power at the end and France became similar to how it was before. But, any man could vote if he paid taxes or was in the army. This was a big step for them.
  • They listened I can vote!
