In France, the peasants had to work numerous jobs to support their families. Many died early from overworking, poor nutrition, and hunger. They had to pay the most taxes, even though they were the class most unable to pay them. They paid taxes to the crown, church, and local nobility. A tax was put on salt in some places and bread in others as there was no uniform tax system.

Throughout the French Revolution, there was famine and poor harvests. Bread was the peasants main food supply, but prices fluctuated. Most could not afford the bread and support their families. They could only keep 15-20% of their harvest and livestock. This caused them to riot.
