Kino is the main character in The Pearl. He has a wife named Juana, and a son named Coyotito. He also has a brother named Juan Thomas who helps Kino when he needs it. Kino is a pearl diver and found the pearl of the world. He is trying to sell it to someone who will pay a great amount of money.
Juana is Kino's wife and Coyotito's mother. She cares about her family very much and wants the best for them. When Kino finds the pearl and keeps it in the hut, she feels in danger. Juana thinks the pearl is evil and will only bring them trouble. She doesn't care about the money, only her family.
Coyotito is the child of Kino and Juana. He was stung by a scorpion and has venom inside of him. At first, the doctor had refused to treat his sting because his family was poor. After Kino had found the pearl, the doctor had decided to cure him of it, but he also made the baby sick again because he had wanted to get more money from the family once they had money.
The doctor operates in the town of La Paz. He is first met when Kino brings Coyotito to be treated for the scorpion sting. At first he refuses to treat the poor family, but after Kino finds the pearl he treats the child. He poisons Coyotito then provides medicine. He did this so it would look as if the sting was much worse and he could get paid more.
Juan Tomas is the brother of Kino. When Kino goes to try and sell the pearl, Juan accompanies him on his trip. He supports Kino and Kino's family and is trying to help Kino sell the pearl for more money than the office in La Paz would give them.
When Kino first tries to sell the pearl, he goes to this buyer in hopes of selling the pearl for a lucrative profit. Unfortunately, the buyer informs Kino the pearl is not worth his asking price of 50,000 pesos. The buyer only offers 1,500 pesos which angers Kino.
